L&R Radio was founded in Rome, Georgia, by two local band members and podcasters Benjamin Gaylor & Jay Howell in 2012. Frustrated with commercial FM, they launched a 24 / 7 stream—hosted on Mixlr and embedded into their website site. These “college radio” style streams shined the spotlight on underground, unsigned and largely regional artists across rock, hip‑hop, metal, punk, jazz and related genres. Regular flagship programes included The Northwest Georgia Variety Show, The Rob Roberts Experience and a live‑concert series branded Concertcasts.
The station went off-air indefinitely due to other project aspirations. Ben went full speed with Benjamin.K Music, and Jay continued as the front man and lead singer for Shotgun Eulogy (one of the sickest bands at the time) & they accrued quite the following.
There were a number of original podcasts and shows that spotlighted underground, unsigned and largely regional artists across rock, hip‑hop, metal, punk, jazz and related genres. Regular flagship programs included The Rob Roberts Experience, Jay’s Metal Show, The Northwest Georgia Variety Show, & ConcerCasts.
We loved the energy of live shows, so we took our gear out to local venues and broadcast concerts live over the internet. These live-streamed ConcertCasts let anyone, anywhere, experience the show in real time. In between sets we’d hop on-air to chat and spin some of our local favorite tracks for listeners tuning in. We’re proud to say we pulled off three Concertcasts in our very first month alone! For example, in October 2013 we streamed a Rocktoberfest show live from Schroeder’s venue in Rome. And there’s nothing quite like doing a “Concertcast” from a legendary Atlanta venue and knowing local music fans across Georgia (and beyond) can be at the Masquerade (the old one…).
Over 2012–2014, our Concertcasts featured an wide range of up-and-coming acts. We’ve broadcast performances by indie rock bands like Blacklight Crush and The Strange, punk/alternative outfits such as Wolves in DC, and talented singer-songwriters like Kylie Devaron – all recorded live on stage and streamed to our listeners. Those nights truly captured what L&R was about: community, music, and the thrill of discovery.
